Learn Kayaking in India
Safety for Beginners
Everyone can kayak! Given the right conditions & gear you could be on the water going long distances. It's important to know more about the sport & focus on the safety aspects before you set out for a paddle. Most kayaking incidents happen because of an unplanned or impromptu session. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you next kayaking session. Practice kayaking under the supervision of an experienced instructor in safe conditions.
Safety First! Check the weather, wind direction & currents, wear a PFD (Personal Floatation Device) & go with an instructor or an experienced buddy. Prepare for your session using a kayak checklist & inform someone experienced on land before you go. Stay at home if you don't do any of the above!
Setup on the beach before going out, remember to practice launching & landing before you head out for a session. You want to know how & where you will come back before you head out!
Start slow - get comfortable with the kayak in the current conditions don't be in a hurry to go far away from the beach. Remember to practice in a safe haven with an experienced buddy or instructor.
Posture - Always keep your back straight and knees wide. you want your weight to be balanced out and your body and the kayak to work as one unit. It would be hard to maintain balance if you’re weight was all over the place. Spend some time getting used to turning and how the paddle works in the water. Once you work out how the kayak reacts to each stroke your session will be easier.
Way back home - Always remember to go out there and have a great time! But keep an eye on the coastline, weather & your watch. Remember to come back on time to be able to share your experience with others!
