Format of the Groms Quest 2025
The JD&AV Groms Quest is a first-of-its-kind national pathway designed to identify, train, and elevate young Stand Up Paddle (SUP) athletes across India. Founded by Jehan Driver (Ocean Ambassadors Foundation) and Arun Vasu (Arun Vasu Foundation – TT Group), and supported by the Surfing Federation of India (SFI) and state surfing associations, the initiative follows a structured, grassroots-to-national progression model that nurtures ocean talent from local communities.
1. One-Day Workshop – Discovering New Talent
Each Groms Quest event begins with a one-day intensive SUP workshop led by International Surfing Association (ISA) course presenter Jehan Driver and certified ISA Stand Up Paddle Instructors.
Participants aged 10 to 18 are introduced to:
- Basic SUP handling and paddling techniques
- Ocean safety, balance, and control
- Endurance and sprint drills
- Fun races and team challenges
This workshop not only builds fundamental water skills but also introduces participants to the discipline and excitement of competitive Stand Up Paddleboarding.
2. Selection Trials – Spotting Future Champions
The day concludes with selection trials, conducted under ISA competition guidelines. Each participant is evaluated on:
- Paddling technique and form
- Speed and balance under pressure
- Sportsmanship and teamwork
Top performers are shortlisted as potential district SUP athletes, marking their entry into India’s official talent pathway.
3. Progression Pathway – From Districts to Nationals
Selected participants receive sponsorship and training support for the next stage — moving from district-level training camps to state championships, and ultimately to the National SUP Championship Series.
Those showing exceptional performance and commitment are mentored by SFI-certified coaches and may represent India at ISA-recognized international events.
4. A Grassroots Model for National Growth
The Groms Quest format is designed to make SUP accessible across India’s coastline and inland waters — from fishing villages in Tamil Nadu and urban clubs in Mumbai to the backwaters of Kerala. The initiative encourages local clubs, schools, and coastal authorities to collaborate, creating opportunities for youth to learn, compete, and grow.
“Every event uncovers incredible new talent from India’s coasts. With the right structure and continued support, these young paddlers can compete on the world stage,” says Jehan Driver, ISA Course Presenter and Ocean Coach.
Building India’s SUP Future
By combining education, competition, and community engagement, the JD&AV Groms Quest provides a sustainable platform for youth empowerment and sports development. The event format ensures that every participant — whether they are new to the sport or chasing podium finishes — takes a meaningful step toward becoming a true waterman or waterwoman.
With continued support from partners like the Surfing Federation of India, TT Group, Quest Academy, Mumbai Surf Club, Paddle for Future, Tamil Nadu Surfing Association and regional associations, the Groms Quest aims to establish a national circuit of SUP talent, shaping India’s identity as a leading Stand Up Paddle nation in the Indian Ocean region.
